Postponed elections in Groote Archipelago

A step toward inclusive local governance

Dear Stakeholders,

In response to the strong community sentiment within the Groote Archipelago, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Community Development, Steve Edgington, has decided to postpone the Groote Archipelago Regional Council elections to 15 March 2025.

The original structure, proposed one ward for the region. Anindilyakwa leaders and community members have expressed the need for a council structure that ensures representation from across all communities within the Groote Archipelago, so that each community has a voice in local governance.

The postponement will allow for further consultation with Anindilyakwa leaders and community members to determine a fair and inclusive ward structure. Discussions will focus on how many wards should be established, their boundaries, and the number of Councillors needed to represent each ward effectively.
